Benefits of Deep Section Wheels
Everyone can gain an advantage from using deep section wheels, although this increases in proportion with your speed. They help to smooth out the turbulance caused by your bike as you travel forward, disturbing the air.
The best use is to put one on the front, as this is the first point of contact – only using one here (with a normal rear wheel) though will still gain a sizeable advantage. This is the best practice if your budget is limited. Rather than purchasing a pair of shallower aero wheels, plumb for a deeper one on the front. As you progress in the sport, you can purchase the rear version or a disc, to gain an even better aero advantage.
Carbon Deep Section Wheels
Carbon deep section wheels are normally very stiff and flex a lot less that aluminium wheels, making them more energy efficient. They will allow the rider to accelerate quicker coming out of bends, or during bends out of saddle efforts. Although some deep section aero wheels tend to be heavier, they usually have smoother bearings and therefore roll faster for longer, which can help climbing on rolling courses, as can their stiffness.
Brake Blocks
If the wheels are all carbon, you will need to purchase special brake blocks, as normal rubber ones will not work. However, if they have either an aluminium rim or braking strip then normal brake blocks will suffice.
