Isotonic Gels & Sports Fuels on the Move
Isotonic gels and fluids are the correct balance of sugars
absorbed quickly into the blood stream. They also contain
electrolytes which speed up fluid absorption and maintain fluid
balance. This can also help reduce the risk of cramp in some
cases.
Liquid Sports Fuels
If you are training or racing and sweating then you need to
replace the fluid balance in the body and - importantly - replace
what you are sweating out which is not just water. Try to get in
the habit of drinking one 750ml bottle of sports drink per hour
during training and racing. Of course you cannot drink during a
swim race, but make sure you have a bottle on poolside during
training.
Hydrating on the Move
It’s easy to drink on the bike, but try setting your watch to
bleep every 10 minutes to remind you when to take a sip. You are
unlikely to drink during run training, however if it is a long run
then it’s wise to carry a bottle with you.
If racing, either carry a bottle or make sure you use the aid
stations. If you are training or racing over 2 hours then moving
on to the bike, make sure you take on board 1-2 gels per hour in
order to get enough calories on board along with the drink.
