Our Guide to Sports Fuel
Sports fuels come in many different forms, but the bottom line
is that it’s VERY important to rehydrate with something other than
water and to take on board some kind of energy during training and
racing.
Sports Nutrition & Energy Fuels
You can get ready mixed energy drinks and powder which contain
carbs and electrolytes (these help with fluid absorption and
balance). These are generally used during training, racing and for
recovery after exercise.
Hydrating Energy Gels
Sports gels are an easy way of taking on board carbohydrates
during longer training sessions and races. As well as gels, there
are energy bars. These are generally a more complete package of
carbs, electrolytes, vitamins, minerals and sometimes protein.
They can be used during racing, training and for recovery.
Nutrition Bars
The problem with bars is they are difficult to chew during
racing so you may want to stick to gels and fluid during racing,
and bars during training. However, the bottom line is you should
use what suits you, so try them all and see what you feel
comfortable with.
Sports drinks and energy bars are good for recovery, but you
can also get specific recovery drinks which are generally much
higher in protein. The protein helps repair and rebuild damage
done to your body. This is how you improve - the body breaks down
during exercise but repairs itself to a much greater level than
originally.
