Smerin’s Spring Trip with Gordo - Day 2
01/05/2009
Started with a light jog pre breakfast, nothing too savage. 1hr with HR near 160 most of the way ;-) After breakfast we headed over to Dave Scott’s swim class. It was a beautiful sunny day and the class was held in an outdoor 25m pool. Monica, Gordo’s wife, it appears, is an awesome swimmer, normally leading out of the water in IMs and having lead Hawaii Ironman for over 5hrs one year. The line up on the pool side was a collection of seriously ripped pros, including some World champions, Chrisse Wellington, Greg and Laura Bennett, Simon Lessing. I nervously shuffled down to the slowest lane for the swim class (note I’m not calling it a slow lane, going off on 1m55 for 100s is a stretch for me!). It was all good in the end though. Dave found a number of ‘Development areas’ for my stroke, and after 3.5kms I was ready for some food. After lunch I headed out for a 2hr ride up a canyon to a town called Jamestown. The conditions were great; it was sunny and around 17 degrees. Was a great 7 mile gentle climb, nice introduction for the next 5 days without being too savage. Quick sports massage, dinner and time to hit the hay.
Next 5 days are a road trip with Gordo through the rockies, stopping on the way for some swim sessions and runs. Tomorrow afternoon we’re climbing up above Vail, on a snow cleared road up to around 12,000 feet - let you know how that goes!
