I was hoping to have a fantastic result to write about, but unfortunately I had another bad triathlon race experience. It has pretty much capped off my first proper season in triathlon and I will move on from it and hopefully be more successful next year!............

It’s six days until one of the biggest races of my season – the London Hyde Park triathlon! This race is on the course that will be used for the London 2012 Olympics, and I am so excited! Training has been going generally well, although last week was quite tough for me. I have been really tired and struggling to recover between sessions. During the actual training I’ve been fine – it’s just afterwards! I just want to sleep all the time! I have put it down to mental stress, as...........

"Recovery day today couldn’t have come at a better time - 18hrs total training last 4 days. Still in Moab, UT this morning. Had an early start and went to check out the Slick Road bike trail. Unbelievable place, world famous for mountain bikers and trail bikers. Picture a sea of undulating rocks and caves, definitely wouldn’t be amiss in a Star Wars film! We ran 10km."
07/05/2009
6am - time to start snacking ahead of the ride. Big bowl of Museli, Banana bread, big bowl of Oatmeal with Olive oil, 2 giant cups of coffee (rocket fuel) and we’re ready to hit the road for a 165km epic ride over Boulder mountain and back.
05/05/2009
Big ride this morning back up the Canyon towards Colorado then sharp right onto the Lasal loop road. Headed over the Lasal pass via the ‘Big Nasty’ climb then fast downhill back into Moab, all in just over 100kms with 1900m climbing.
05/05/2009
Wow... Training has really picked up a notch last 2 days! Was WAY too tired to write anything yesterday; even now i’m thinking about going straight to bed (it’s only 8pm).
02/05/2009
"Am very tired today, haven’t fully acclimatised to the altitude yet. 3.5km outdoor swim set this morning with Dave Scott’s sister - it was brutal. The lane I was in (not quite the slowest today) meant I was having 5-8s rest between all intervals!!"
01/05/2009
"First real day of training - it was an epic one! Clearly a hardy traveller, no signs of jet-lag so far. I managed to sleep in 'til 7. Amazingly woke up short of breath - Boulder is at 5,500 feet!!"

"I am now back in the UK after a long spell of training in Florida. It’s a bit of a shock getting used to the cold, but good to be back in my home again. Following the Bermuda race, I got a good 3 weeks of solid training done. Because the weather was really great in Florida, the aim was to get lots of bike mileage in and back off the swimming a little. I had already been swimming very well prior to the trip, so was not too concerned there. What I was concerned about was the long, cold British winter ahead of me, and I knew that getting out on the bike would be difficult. The more I got on top of the cycling in Florida, the less I would worry when back in the UK. So it was fairly short swims and long bike rides on the menu."
19/12/2008
"At this stage, my race schedule is only pencilled in, but I have a pretty good idea. I plan to officially launch my comeback, race schedule and charity activities in February, but here is a brief insight for Nice2Tri blog readers."
04/11/2008
"This was my first race back in action after a 2 year period of retirement and total rest. With 2 months of light training and 2 months of fairly normal training under my belt, I just wanted to test myself to see if it really was going to be realistic making a full comeback. I knew before the race I was not in great shape – of course not with only a few months of training. But I would know what I needed to do over the winter to be back at the top."
19/08/2008
"Well I have seriously been struggling during this 2nd month of training! I am still doing 3 swims, 3 bikes and 3 runs each week, but the sessions have now become longer at high intensity."

Catch up with Richard Allen Back on the Course - "To sum up July’s month of racing, I had 2 really pleasing races at the beginning. Firstly was the Blenheim triathlon – this is a sprint race in the grounds of Blenheim Palace. I did this race last year, as it was the junior national championships."
03/07/2008
The Highs & Lows - "I have had quite a horrid time racing of late after becoming ill following my 4th at the Yorkshire RR Championships at the beginning of June. I had to take nearly a complete week off training, and in my haste to try and recoup some of the training time lost I put in a quite hard 32h training week to try and prepare myself for the National RR Champs which were held in Hemsley, about 25 miles away from where I live."

So you are thinking about getting in to triathlon and want to start doing some basic training? Maybe you have entered a small event already? Triathlon is a sport where you not only have a lot to consider with the training, you also have a lot to consider with other areas such as equipment. Once you have done a few races, it is worthwhile investing in some decent entry level kit, but what is the bare minimum to get started?

Philip Speaks About a Recent Race - "I have been extremely busy of late trying to find some cycling form for the next month’s upcoming races, and I am thankful the weather has been conspiring with me. I have been riding 3-4h in the morning everyday, watching the Giro for 2h in the afternoon and swimming and running in the evening."

First of all, not everyone is a seasoned triathlete. What if you have never done a triathlon before or never even done any endurance exercise? Maybe you are getting to the end of your football or rugby playing days and are looking for a new challenge. Or maybe you just want to stay healthy. You don’t have to enter a triathlon, and you don’t have to train like a pro, but where do you start?

It may take you a year to take 1 minute off your swim split, and you’ll probably work hard at trying to achieve this. Few people work hard at trying to improve their transitions, and it is relatively easy to take this amount of time off with just a small amount of practice and visualisation.

As you get closer to the race season, it is not just important to be physically ready, but also mentally prepared for the competitions. So many people just don’t address their mental approach, and this is often the difference between an okay performance and your best. Two key areas to work on are confidence and commitment.

By the time February comes around, you should have your race season planned out in full. Until this is in place, it is difficult to map out your training for the season.
