Richard Allen Tips- June- Equipment to get started

So you are thinking about getting in to triathlon and want to start doing some basic training. Maybe you have entered a small event already? Triathlon is a sport where you not only have a lot to consider with the training, you also have a lot to consider with other areas such as equipment. Once you have done a few races it is worth while investing in some decent entry level kit, but what is the bare minimum to get started. Here is a kit list for beginners that you can use as a guide-

Swim kit-

Swim suit and triathlon specific suit- Something to train in at the pool and a comfortable all in one suit that you can wear for the whole triathlon.

Goggles- Go for comfortable fit and perhaps get some anti fog solution to stop them steeming up.

Swim Accessories- Pull buoy, Kick float and flippers. The pull buoy goes between your legs to keep you more buoyant, the kick float you hold out in front of you when just kicking and the flippers will make it easier to move forward so you can concentrate on your stroke. All very useful!

Wetsuit- You only need a wetsuit if your first race is open water. If not then don’t worry about one for now. When starting out go for a basic suit that is comfortable and tight fitting. It will loosen off once you start swimming so don’t be too worried that it is very tight. The only area it should not be too tight is across the shoulders. You will find you are much faster in a wetsuit as you are very buoyant.

Body glide- this comes in a stick and will prevent chaffing during a race. It will also help the wetsuit to come off more easily.

Towel- No explanation need here I hope!

Bike Kit-

Bike- Just an entry level bike will do. After a few races you might want to upgrade to something a bit lighter and more responsive. If you are using an old bike then have it serviced to make sure it works well and is safe. If you are racing on a mountain bike to start with, bare in mind that this will be a lot slower although probably more comfortable.
Helmet- Make sure it is in good condition with no cracks if it is an old one. If buying a new one go for an enrty level one with lots of air vents to keep cool.

Bike shoes- You will probably do your first few races in trainers but look to upgrade to specific triathlon cycle shoes as these are much faster, very comfortable and more efficient.

Bike tool, spare inner tube and pump- Don’t just buy them, get a friend to show you how to use them.

Bike clothing- Padded bike shorts are a good purchase. Need I say why?! You will also need a top with pockets in the back for your tools and spares. If you are training in the winter then a good pair of gloves, water proof jacket and tights are a must.

Run kit-

Trainers- A good pair of running shoes is very important even if you are a complete beginner. Injuries can occur if running in old or unstable shoes. Replace your shoes every 6 months even if you are a complete beginner.

Elastic laces- These enable you to slip your shoes on quickly in the triathlon. They are also very comfortable for every day running.

Running clothing- What ever you are comfortable in?

Heart rate monitor- Just an entry level heart rate monitor that gives a heart rate reading and has a stop watch. Try to keep your heart rate down when doing the easy training. It will give you a good idea of how hard you are trying.

Lots of equipment is need for triathlon! Although you do need everything on the list using old equipment as long as it is safe and works is fine to start with. However if you don’t have it then you will need to buy it. Once you have got the bug load up at the Nice2Tri online store with good quality entry level kit.
